Maybe it relates all the way back to the Sex Pistols when Jonny Rotten screamed that there was Anarchy in the UK. In recent times, we can trace back Alternative to the time in the Pacific Northwest when a group of three misfits, clad in flannel, emerged from obscurity, handpicked by David Geffen and Gary Gersh, and brandished their guitar, bass and drums to the sweet smell of teen spirit. It is the ironic stance of music, embraced by the masses, written by the outsiders. It is Alternative.
